WORK

The London Metropolitan University is from a merger of the London Guildhall University and the North London University. The London Guildhall University used to be the City of London Polytechnic and carries many of the polytechnic ideals to this day. The University has a number of sites in the City of London, 'East End' and North of London. I work for the Academic services Department at the Tower Hill site. This site is opposite the Tower of London and houses the Computing and Mathmatics and the Civil Aviation teaching departments as well as the main computing service centre for the 'Guildhall' part of the new University (now known as the City Campus).

The University runs an outreach program that is designed to get youngsters from the boroughs around the Uni into further education. We have a good success rate as many of these young folk go on to get degrees.

My department, whose name and initials changes way too fast and frequently for me to want to keep updating it here, supports both staff and students by providing computing facilities and libraries as well as integrated centres combining both books and IT facilities. I work on the IT Support Desk that provides support to the university staff. We essentially analyse incoming staff problems and either provide a solution ourselves or move the problem on to a member of the service team who can deal with it. We monitor what is happening and ensure that the problems are dealt with rather than forgotten. I used to work in the computer support office that looked after the student computers at the Tower Hill site as well as helping both students and staff with computer usage.
