Cthulu

H.P.Lovecraft probably did not forsee when he wrote his stories of the way the world they depicted and the horrors that inhabited them would be used for gaming today. The table top game called "The Call Of Cthulu" (Copyrighted and registered to Chaosism Inc. I believe) has been enduringly popular.

It is a world where behind the scenes aliens war, where there are secret wars going on between various human factions who have allied themselves to one or more alien groups, where dead can be raised, ghosts abound, every horror can exist, governments have special departments that make Torchwood old hat and magic, though secret, exists but eats away the sanity of those who use it. In spite of this most of humanity carries on as usual.

The most popular games are set in the roaring twenties so flappers and men keeping stiff upper lips abound. Women are protected and royalty revered.

There are a few people who investigate horror. Solve murders. Muddle through as best they can and try not to loose too much sanity on the way. These are the players. They can become unsung heros or gibbering wrecks, if they are lucky. It is a game where the odds are stacked against the players and where, if the person(s) running the game are good, the players are puzzled, scared, do lots of running away and hiding and, when the game is over, find they have pleanty to think about.
